UP AP2 from the Up collection by Ideal Lux is an outdoor wall light reduced to the simplest possible form: a rectangular block 6.5 × 15 cm, standing 9.5 cm off the wall, with no shade, no frame and no visible screws. Light leaves it only through the top and the bottom — the body stays a dark matt mass on the façade, and what you see is the effect rather than the fitting.
Two beams: down and up
The manufacturer describes the emission as direct and indirect at the same time. In practice that means two symmetrical beams: one falls onto the wall below and lights the area by a door or a flight of steps, the other travels upward and fades out across the façade. On brick, textured render or stone the upward beam brings out the surface — which is the usual reason for choosing an up/down fitting instead of an ordinary wall light with a shade.
Die-cast aluminium and Pyrex glass
The body is die-cast aluminium finished in powder-coated coffee — a dark, subdued brown that reads almost as graphite on a façade and shows its warm cast in daylight. The openings are closed with clear Pyrex glass diffusers, a glass that copes with the thermal shock of a hot fitting meeting cold rain. The same fitting is offered in the collection in anthracite, white, grey and black.
Two G9 sockets, lamps chosen separately
Inside sit two G9 lampholders rated at a maximum of 15 W each; bulbs are not included. Ideal Lux names its own 307879 G9 4 W 4000 K lamp with a colour rendering index of CRI 80 as the recommended source — neutral white works well on a façade, where legibility matters more than mood. The fitting is not dimmable and needs no driver: it runs straight off 220–240 V AC mains.
IP44 and protection class I
IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction and against solid objects from 1 mm up — enough for a house wall, a porch, a terrace or a fence, but not for a fitting hosed down under pressure. The light is Class I, so installation requires an earth conductor and belongs to a qualified electrician. The manufacturer gives a 5-year warranty and the fitting carries CE conformity.
Where UP AP2 works
On either side of a front door, along a garage wall, beside outdoor steps, on a fence pillar, on a terrace or balcony wall. Because it lights only the bands above and below itself rather than the space in front, it works well in rhythmic groups — several units at equal spacing turn a long wall into a run of repeating hourglass shapes. For tighter spots the Up collection offers the single-light UP AP1 (code 213347) with the same width and depth but a height of 8 cm.
