RUSTY 70 is a garden bollard in rusting steel – a cylinder 19 cm across and 70 cm tall, weighing 13.4 kg. The rust here is neither neglect nor a lacquer imitating patina: it is a genuine oxide layer, induced chemically on FeCSi steel back at the factory.
Why rusting steel
FeCSi is an alloyed steel in which copper and silicon make the rust layer form quickly and then seal itself – the dense patina cuts oxygen off from the deeper layers and corrosion stops at the surface. It is the same principle architecture uses with Corten sheet. Two practical consequences follow. First: the bollard needs no painting and no maintenance, and looks slightly different with every season. Second: no two units are identical – the run of the patina depends on the chemical bath and on where the fitting ends up standing.
How much light it gives
9 W and 70 lumens – read that literally. RUSTY is not a fitting for lighting a path well enough to read a map; SLV classifies its emission as direct-indirect with a rotationally symmetric distribution. The bollard marks the line of a path, a bed or a driveway, glowing discreetly in every direction. The 3000 K colour is warm, CRI 80 is plenty in a garden, and the manufacturer states a flicker metric of SVM 3.25 on the datasheet.
L70B50 at 35,000 hours
Declared life is 35,000 hours at L70B50. The shorthand is worth understanding: after 35,000 hours at least half the fittings will retain at least 70% of their initial output. That is not a failure point but the threshold below which the manufacturer no longer guarantees brightness – running dusk to dawn, that is well over a decade.
IP55 and installation
IP55 covers protection against dust and against water jets from any direction – rain, snow and watering the garden are not an issue. The fitting is protection class I, so it needs an earth conductor, and runs directly on 220–240 V AC 50/60 Hz. SLV offers two accessories worth ordering alongside: a ground spike (installation without a foundation) and a junction box 228730 rated IP68, which fits inside the round shaft and lets the cable joint be made watertight. Ambient temperature range −20 to +45 °C.
