Huguenot Lake is an above-mirror bathroom wall light from Elstead Lighting, made for the Generation Lighting (Feiss) range. The collection is a classic rendition of an early Colonial look: a circular wall plate, hand-spun fitters and two bell-shaped shades in clear seeded glass. Article FE-HUGOLAKE2BATH-BB is the Burnished Brass finish — warmer and more muted than the polished chrome twin in the same family.

Made for the mirror zone

This fitting is designed specifically for mounting above a bathroom mirror. It is rated IP44, protected against splashing water from any direction, which qualifies it for bathroom zone 2 and outside the zones. Elstead states the intended location plainly: Interior / Bathroom. Two light points sitting symmetrically either side of the wall plate light the face from both sides, removing the shadows under the eyes and chin that a single ceiling fitting always leaves.

Mount it up or down

The fixture is reversible — the manufacturer allows it to be installed with the shades pointing up or down. Shades down gives stronger, more practical light onto the basin and face; shades up washes the ceiling and produces a softer, decorative effect. The same fitting therefore works above a bathroom mirror or on a hallway wall.

Clear seeded glass

The shades are clear seeded glass — transparent, with air bubbles deliberately trapped in the melt. This differs from the polished chrome version of the same collection, which uses pressed opal etched glass. Clear glass transmits more light and lets you see the lamp itself, giving a sparkling, decorative character. Bear this in mind when replacing lamps: with clear glass the diode is visible, so frosted-envelope G9 lamps look better.

Before you buy

This is a Class I fitting, so the back box above the mirror must have an earth conductor. The G9 base is replaceable, but it is a miniature base — when relamping, keep to the manufacturer's 3 W LED maximum and do not fit the old 25–40 W G9 halogens, which run far hotter inside an enclosed shade above a mirror. The combined 600 lm is task and accent lighting — enough over a basin, but a larger bathroom still needs a general ceiling fitting.
