ANTIC is a single-light pendant from the Maytoni Antic series: a gold ceiling rose and a sphere at the joint carry an elongated cast-glass shade in a cognac tint, covered in vertical ribs. The shade is 10 cm across and 30 cm tall, and 34.7 cm together with the sphere.

How high to hang it

The drop adjusts between 39 and 180 cm, so the pendant suits a low ceiling as well as a room with a gallery. Over a dining table or a kitchen island it is usually shortened so that the bottom edge of the shade sits 70-80 cm above the top - the light then falls on the surface rather than into the eyes of anyone seated.

At 10 cm across this fitting lights only a narrow part of a table, which is why several are usually hung in a row over a longer table or an island. The rose is 10 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm high, the pendant weighs 1 kg, and it screws to a mounting bar fixed in the ceiling.

Which bulb it takes

There is one E14 lampholder for a bulb of up to 40 W. Maytoni publishes neither a luminous flux nor a light colour for this article - no bulb is supplied, so brightness and colour come with the lamp you choose. For dining, 2700-3000 K is the usual pick, which is warm light.

The manufacturer states that the fitting is not dimmable, so a dimmable bulb and a wall dimmer will achieve nothing here. The glass is tinted and ribbed: it passes less light than a clear shade and gives it an amber cast, while the ribs break the glow into vertical bands.

Wiring and mounting

The pendant runs on 230 V and is built to protection class I, so the ceiling box has to carry an earth conductor - without one it must not be connected. Its IP20 rating restricts it to dry interiors, away from a shower zone and from a hob.

The Antic series also includes a ten-light version and wall lights for one and two E14 lamps, so the same shape can be repeated on a wall or extended over a longer table. The manufacturer files the series under its Modern collection, while its proportions are classic - a plain capsule with no ornament beyond the rhythm of the ribs.
