Woven rattan instead of plastic or ceramic

The material behaves differently in a bathroom from the usual ceramic or plastic: it is light, warm to the touch, and carries a visible weave that breaks up the smoothness of tile and glass. Every piece differs slightly in tone and weave pattern — a mark of handwork, not a fault.

A weave that lets air through

The cylindrical form, 9 × 9 cm and 12 cm tall, holds a set of brushes for two people plus toothpaste. The wall construction is what matters most, though: the open weave lets air circulate around the bristles, so wet brushes dry faster than in a closed cup where water runs to the bottom and stays there. That is the practical advantage of basketry over a ceramic vessel.

Using it so it lasts

Rattan is a plant material and does not like constant contact with water. In practice that means two things: shake the brushes off before putting them in, and keep the holder out of the direct reach of the shower. Cleaning: wipe with a damp (not wet) cloth and let it dry; never submerge it and never put it in a dishwasher. In a very humid house it is worth standing it somewhere dry and airy for a few hours now and then.
