The twisted handle is not only decoration

The stem of this fork is twisted into a spiral by hand. The effect is decorative, but it also does something: the grooves give the fingers purchase, so the piece does not rotate in the hand when tossing a heavy salad. Every one is made by hand, so the twist and the grain never repeat exactly — two from the same order will resemble each other without being identical.

Teak wood

The manufacturer names the material plainly: teak wood. Teak is naturally rich in oils, which is why it has been used for centuries wherever wood meets moisture — on yacht decks and in bathrooms. In a kitchen utensil that means it does not take up the smell of vinegar, garlic or oil the way soft woods do, and it does not crack from changes in humidity in normal use.

Size and use

Length 27 cm, with a section of roughly 2 × 2 cm. That is a serving size rather than a table one — the fork reaches the bottom of an ordinary salad bowl and lifts the leaves from underneath without crushing them. It suits leaf and pasta salads, and serving to a shared table.

Care

Wooden utensils are washed by hand in lukewarm water and dried immediately — a dishwasher, and long soaking, leach the natural oils out of teak, leaving it grey with the grain raised. Every few months it is worth rubbing the surface with a food-safe oil (linseed, or a board oil), which brings the colour back and renews the moisture barrier.
