IP65 — a globe that can stay outdoors all year
CELENDIN carries an IP65 rating. The first digit means complete dust-tightness, the second resistance to water jetted from any angle. In practice that permits installation in a fully exposed position: over a doorway with no canopy, above a terrace open to the sky, or under a pergola that rain passes through. Fittings of a lower class, IP44 for instance, would need cover.
The shade is made of resin fibre — a material that absorbs no water and does not lose its colour under UV as quickly as ordinary plastic. Its surface has a visibly granular texture that scatters the light unevenly when the lamp is on, giving an effect close to a paper lantern — only weatherproof.
A 40 cm globe on a black drop
The design is as simple as it gets: a white globe 40 cm across, a black cable and a black ceiling rose. The contrast is deliberate — after dark the pale shade becomes the only visible element while the dark suspension disappears against the night sky, so the globe seems to hang in mid-air.
The total height including the drop is 250 cm. That is a lot, and on purpose: this length lets the fitting hang beneath a high terrace roof or in a gateway passage and bring the light down to the height where it is actually needed. With a lower ceiling the cable is shortened at installation.
12 W maximum — and what that means
The socket is an ordinary E27, but the maximum lamp rating is only 12 W. That limit is worth understanding before buying: it rules out halogen and incandescent bulbs, which give almost no light at such a wattage, and in practice means LED only.
This is not a shortcoming. A good E27 LED of 10–12 W now delivers 1000–1500 lumens — as much as a 100 W filament bulb once did — and the wattage cap follows from the closed globe, which gives heat nowhere to go. When choosing a lamp, an opal envelope is the sensible pick; inside a spherical shade any point source draws a brighter patch on the surface.
A bulb is not included. Fit a lamp marked as dimmable and the light can be controlled with an ordinary dimmer — the fitting itself contains no electronics that would get in the way.
Where it works
This is not a floodlight and is not meant to light a driveway or a flight of steps. At 40 cm across, with soft diffuse light, its job is to mark a place: the table on the terrace, the entrance to the house, the seating area in the garden. Several units hung at different heights above a terrace achieve something a single fitting cannot.
Installation needs a fixed 230 V supply brought out in the ceiling of the canopy. Given the IP65 rating it is best left to an electrician — the seal depends on the ceiling rose being closed correctly, not on the shade itself.
