The Norlys HELSINKI 886AL is an outdoor wall light on a long arm: a round wall plate, a straight bracket and a shade built from a broad flat disc, three ring louvres and a clear cylinder. The body is a powder-coated aluminium casting in RAL 9006, a light silver-grey.

How far it stands off the wall

The manufacturer's drawing gives 370 mm in height, a disc 410 mm across and a reach of 580 mm from the wall face; the wall plate is 120 mm. Nearly 60 cm of reach is the figure to compare against the width of the path or driveway running along the wall — this fitting hangs over the passage rather than beside it.

It fixes on the mounting box supplied with it. At that reach the moment on the fixing is far greater than on a wall-hugging fitting, so the substrate has to be load-bearing masonry rather than cladding.

How it spreads the light

The lamp sits between the broad disc above and three ring louvres below. The disc throws the light back down and the louvres screen the lamp from the side, so the fitting lights a large stretch of facade without shining into the eyes of someone walking up to it. The polycarbonate shade is clear at the top and satin at the bottom, where the fitting is seen from underneath, and UV-stabilised against yellowing.

Which lamp it takes and how it is wired

The fitting has an E27 socket on 230 V and is designed for an LED lamp of up to 9 W. No lamp is included, and 9 W is the ceiling for the lamp rather than the fitting's own consumption.

It is protection class I, so it needs a protective earth conductor. The terminals take conductors up to 3 × 2.5 mm² and allow looping through at up to 3 × 1.5 mm², so a row of these along a facade runs off one supply rather than a separate cable to each. The gland accepts round cable of 7–10.5 mm.

Build and durability

IP54 covers dust and splashing water from any direction, so the fitting suits an exposed facade and not only the area under the eaves. The gasket is silicone and the gland EPDM. The manufacturer gives a 5-year warranty on the fitting and a 25-year anti-corrosion warranty on the finish, which is the figure that says how long the coating is meant to last outdoors; a separate corner bracket is available.
