Rendl NYC/RON 40/25 floor lamp, black polycotton shade, chrome base, E27 max 15 W

The NYC/RON 40/25 is a floor lamp built from a chrome-plated frame and a cylindrical shade in black polycotton fabric. The whole frame — round foot, slim tube and shade ring — is chrome and carries no ornament at all. A switch sits on the cable.

How tall it is and how much floor it takes

The lamp stands 147 cm high, roughly shoulder height on an adult, which puts the shade above the eye line of someone sitting in an armchair beside it. The shade itself is 40 cm across and 25 cm high.

It takes up little floor: the round foot is 23 cm across, so it fits between an armchair and the wall or into a corner. It weighs 2.86 kg, which on a floor lamp this tall means the foot is markedly heavier than the rest — that is what holds it upright.

What light source it takes

The socket is built for one E27 light source and runs on 230 V. The manufacturer gives 15 W as the maximum source power — a ceiling for choosing the bulb rather than the lamp's own consumption, because no light source is supplied. For this fitting the manufacturer recommends its own source, article number G13026.

So you pick the light colour yourself: for a living room or bedroom most people choose 2700–3000 K, a warm, slightly yellow light. The black shade fabric absorbs part of the light leaving sideways, so the lamp brightens what is directly below and above it more than it lifts the whole room.

Power and switching

The cable is 180 cm long and ends in a plug — a distance to check against how far the socket is from the spot you have in mind. The switch is set into the cable, so the light goes off without reaching up to the socket: you press the switch lying near the floor.

Finish and where it fits

Chrome with black fabric and no ornament at all is a modernist, minimalist form — the lamp does not argue with the furniture, because its whole outline is a vertical line and a cylinder. The manufacturer intends it for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, and for hotel and restaurant interiors, where it stands singly beside an armchair or sofa.
