Sag Harbor M - a classic box-form wall lantern

The medium Sag Harbor is a two-light wall lantern for outdoor use. Its body is a rectangular box glazed on three sides, capped by a gently curved hood and a slim bar handle that recalls an old storm lantern. Two lampholders sit inside on exposed candle tubes, and a bronze diffuser fills the back panel, bouncing light forwards instead of losing it into the wall.

Finish and materials

The frame is aluminium - a metal that will not rust on a facade - finished in painted burnished bronze, the maker's own name for the coating. It is a warm satin bronze with a visible directional grain, lighter across the hood and handle than on the frame itself. The panes are clear glass, so the bulb stays visible and becomes part of the decoration: this is a fitting designed around a decorative, visible-filament lamp.

Lamps

The lantern takes two E14 lamps. The manufacturer states a maximum wattage of 40 W per lamp; bulbs are not supplied. There is no integrated LED module, so the light source is replaced as in any traditional lantern and the body does not have to be scrapped when the diodes age. The fitting has no dimmer of its own but is compatible with dimmable lamps - add a dimmer to the circuit for smooth control. Elstead pairs it with a Litec E14 candle lamp in clear glass: 4 W, 400 lm, 3000 K, dimmable.

Weather resistance

Sag Harbor carries an IP44 rating. The first digit means protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm; the second, protection against splashing water from any direction. That is the right level for a fitting mounted under an eave, in a porch, beside a front door or on a sheltered terrace wall. The manufacturer backs the lantern with a three-year anti-corrosion guarantee.

Dimensions and installation

The fitting measures 41.9 cm high and 22.8 cm wide, and projects 14 cm from the wall - little enough to stay out of the way on a narrow step or beside a door frame. It weighs 3.4 kg net and 4.12 kg boxed. The lantern is built to protection class I, so it must be connected to a circuit with an earth conductor and installed by a qualified electrician. Supply is 220-240 V at 50 Hz.

Where it works best

A box lantern at this scale is the classic answer beside a front door - mounted in pairs either side of the entrance, or singly by a gate.
