The SLV NUMINOS GIMBLE XS is a compact recessed ceiling spot 8 cm across whose insert rotates through 355° and tilts by 60°. The LED module delivers 730 lm from 7 W in a neutral 4000 K, with a colour rendering index of CRI 90 and a 40° beam.

Directed light, not even wash

"GIMBLE" here means the gimbal: the insert sits in a frame that turns through almost a full circle and tilts 60° off vertical. That changes how you plan a scheme — instead of spacing fittings to wash a ceiling evenly, you can line them up and aim them at a picture, a brick wall, a bookcase or a worktop. The 40° beam is medium-narrow: focused enough to pick out an object, wide enough not to leave a hard rim.

CRI 90 and UGR ≤ 22

Two figures decide the light quality here. CRI 90 is clearly above the usual CRI 80 fittings: the colours of a painting, of wood, fabric and skin read as they really are — which on a light aimed at a specific object is the entire point of buying it. UGR ≤ 22 describes glare: the insert is recessed into the housing, so looking up at the ceiling you do not see the diode. Efficacy works out above 100 lm/W.

A 6.8 cm cut-out and 8 cm of depth

The ceiling opening needs to be 6.8 cm across, with 8 cm of clear space above it — the dimension to check before buying, particularly in a shallow plasterboard build-up. The fitting itself is 8 cm in diameter and 5.7 cm tall, and weighs 0.14 kg. If the ceiling already has a larger hole from an old fitting, SLV offers reducing rings for the NUMINOS XS range (refs 1006135–1006138).

Note: the driver is bought separately

This is the most important thing about the fitting. NUMINOS GIMBLE XS is a constant-current, 200 mA, protection class III module — it does not connect to 230 V and no driver is included. A separate LED driver is required; SLV lists refs 1005609, 1005610 and 1005611 for it. The connection cable is 10 cm, so the driver has to sit close to the fitting, in the void above the ceiling.

This version is not DALI capable. Whether it dims depends on the driver you choose, not on the fitting.

Life and conditions

The manufacturer declares 50,000 hours of service life. The IP20 rating restricts it to dry rooms. The glass temperature at the light outlet reaches 82 °C, which is normal for a directional fitting but worth remembering when adjusting the aim after a long run. Manufacturer's warranty: 5 years.
