A chair built for long sessions, not for quarter of an hour

SONGMICS RCG42GY is a high-back gaming chair designed around one thing: holding a comfortable posture for hours at a time. The backrest rises above the shoulders and continues into shaped bolsters, the seat is wide, and the padding is high-density reflex foam, which does not flatten after a few months the way ordinary upholstery foam does. The chair is covered in PU faux leather in a grey-black camouflage pattern — a smooth surface that a damp cloth cleans.

Adjustment

The backrest reclines to 135°, well past a working posture — far enough to lie back between rounds. Independently of that there is a rocking mechanism that lets the whole seat tilt without changing the backrest angle. The armrests adjust on two axes, up and down as well as sideways, so they can be set to the width of the desk or to where your hands sit on the keyboard.

Two cushions are included: a headrest and a height-adjustable lumbar cushion. The second matters more — it decides whether your lower back aches after three hours, and being able to match its position to your own height makes a real difference.

Construction and safety

The seat frame and the star base are steel rather than plastic, which is where the 150 kg maximum load and the chair's own 22 kg come from. It rolls on nylon castors 65 mm across, larger than standard, so they cope better with the lip between hard floor and rug.

The manufacturer names specific third-party testing: the gas lift was tested by TÜV Rheinland to DIN 4550:2004-12 in class 4 (certificate no. 72744), and the base and castors passed SGS tests (certificates AJHL1801000030FT and AJHL1811002706FT). That is worth noting, because the gas lift and the star base are the two components whose failure on a gaming chair is both the most common and the most dangerous.

Dimensions and assembly

The chair measures 69 × 71 cm in plan and stands 128 to 138 cm tall depending on the gas lift setting. It is a large piece of furniture — check before ordering that it fits between desk and wall, and that it will pass through the door once built. Assembly is done at home; the box holds the chair, an Allen key, an accessory bag and the manual.

The manufacturer flags two points for assembly and use: the underside of the seat carries an arrow showing which way round it goes, and sitting on the front edge of the chair risks tipping it.
