Recessed ceiling lights seem like the simplest lighting in the world:
small, unobtrusive, and they fit anywhere. And yet, it is with these
that the most design mistakes are made—from the infamous “airport”
effect created by twenty spotlights on the ceiling to shadows on the
face in the bathroom. The difference between a professionally lit
interior and one lit haphazardly is almost always a matter of placement,
not the number of fixtures. In this guide: distances from walls and

Types of recessed fixtures
The term “eyelet” covers several different designs:
- Recessed downlights – the classic: a round or square fixture
recessed into a suspended ceiling, most often designed for a GU10 or
MR16 bulb.
- Adjustable spotlights (movable) – downlights with a tilting front
that allow you to direct the light toward a wall, a painting, or a
tabletop.
- Trimless fixtures – installed during the plastering stage, flush
with the ceiling. Maximum minimalism at the cost of more difficult
installation.
- Integrated LED downlights – flat “panels” with a built-in light
source. The thinnest (“slim”) models fit where there is no space above
the panel – but they also require space for the power supply, so check
the fixture specifications for the actual installation depth.
- External recessed and wall-mounted fixtures – weatherproof (IP65+)
equivalents for facades, stairs, and landings.
Fixed or movable? Downlight or spot?
A simple decision-making guide: fixed fixtures shine on the floor,
adjustable ones—on walls and surfaces. If the fixture is intended to
provide general lighting in a hallway, a standard downlight will
suffice. If you want to highlight a painting, a bookshelf, a curtain, or
a tabletop, choose a directional spotlight and angle it at about. 30
degrees from the vertical.
Herein lies the most important rule of good design: light reflected
off the walls makes the interior brighter than light directed at the
floor. A series of spotlights that "wash" the wall makes the room
seem larger and more inviting, even though there aren't actually more
fixtures. Therefore, in living rooms, spotlights should more often be
installed 20–30 cm from the wall and directed toward it—rather than in a
uniform grid in the center of the ceiling.
Layout: distances that work
Numbers to start every project with:
- Distance from the wall: 30–60 cm for general-purpose downlights.
20–30 cm for wall-washing spotlights.
- Spacing between fixtures: approximately half the
room’s height above the illuminated surface. With a ceiling height
of 2.6 m, this comes out to about. 1.2–1.3 m between general lighting
fixtures.
- Above the kitchen countertop: Position the lights
above the edge of the countertop, not over the center of the
walkway—otherwise, you’ll be working in your own shadow.
- In the hallway: a single row of lights every 1–1.5 m. In narrow
hallways, place them closer to one wall (and directed toward it)
rather than exactly in the center.
- Align with the architecture, not the furniture: the
eyelets will stay for years, but the furniture will be moved. Align
the light fixture lines with the walls, windows, and edges of the
built-in units.
Draw the layout to scale on a floor plan that includes furniture—first
mark what needs to be lit, and only then place the light points.
Features are a consequence of function, not the other way around.
How many stitches per square meter?
Let’s start with lumens, because “the number of LEDs” means nothing
without power. General lighting requirements:

A typical GU10 LED bulb provides 345–460 lm. Here’s a handy guideline:
one GU10 bulb per 1.5–2 m² in the kitchen and bathroom, and per 2–3 m²
in the living room and hallway. Example: 6 m² bathroom → 6–8 lights
(including 2 above the mirror). 20 m² living room, where the spotlights
merely complement the chandelier → 8–10 lights in different areas, not
in a uniform grid.
It’s better to plan for a few extra spotlights, on separate circuits
or with a dimmer —you can dim the excess, but you can’t install more
without chipping away at the ceiling.
Spotlights in individual rooms
- Bathroom: in zone 1 (above the bathtub, in the shower stall), at
least IPX4 is required, and in areas exposed to water spray above
the shower, often IPX5. The power supply and luminaire class must
comply with zone regulations. Position the light for the mirror on
the sides—a spot light directly above your head creates shadows
under your eyes.
- Kitchen: a row of spotlights above the edge of the countertop
every 60–80 cm, color temperature 3500–4000 K. Above the island,
pendant lights or a track light are better.
- Living room: spotlights as a complementary layer—wallwashing for
bookshelves and curtains, spotlights on paintings. Leave the central
light to a chandelier or ceiling fixture.
- Hallway and walk-in closet: here, spotlights take center stage.
In the walk-in closet, aim them at the cabinet fronts, not the
center of the floor.
Specifications: GU10, color temperature, beam angle, UGR
- The GU10 base (230 V) is the standard today: you can replace the
bulb in 10 seconds, the selection of colors and beam angles is vast,
and dimmable versions are widely available. You’ll find MR16 (12 V)
lights in older installations with transformers.
- Color temperature: keep it consistent throughout the
room—2700–3000 K for relaxation areas, 3500–4000 K for the kitchen,
“functional” bathroom, and walk-in closet.

Beam angle: 36° is universal general lighting; 15–24° – accents
(artwork, flowers, wall textures); 60°+ – low ceilings and even
light distribution.

CRI: 90+ where you look at
faces and food, which is… almost everywhere. The price difference is
small, but the difference in quality is noticeable.
- UGR (eye-opening): fixtures with a deeply recessed light source
or a honeycomb grid shine just as brightly, but they don’t blind you
from across the room. At Lunares, we pay special attention to this

Step-by-step guide to installing a ceiling light
Installation in a finished suspended ceiling is simpler than it
seems—provided you follow safety guidelines (perform work with the power
turned off. If in doubt, have an electrician connect the wiring):
- Turn off the circuit breaker and use a voltage tester to
confirm there is no voltage.
- Mark the center of the hole according to the design. Use a
detector to check that no profile or cable runs through this spot.
- Cut the hole with a hole saw of the diameter specified by the
fixture manufacturer (usually 68–75 mm)—do not estimate by eye: a
hole that is too large will not be covered by the frame.
- Pull the wire through the hole and connect the terminal block or
quick connector of the fixture (L, N, and in Class I fixtures also
PE).
- Press the mounting springs upward, insert the fixture into the
hole, and let the springs pull it tight against the panel.
- Screw in/insert the GU10 bulb and attach the cover ring.
- Turn on the power and adjust the direction (for movable
spotlights)—remember the 30° rule and ensure the light shines onto
surfaces, not into people’s eyes.
In bathrooms, also ensure the IP rating is appropriate for the
installation zone, and in ceilings with insulation—use fixtures approved
for covering with insulation or maintain the required distance.
Most common mistakes
- A uniform “airport” grid —geometrically spaced openings with no
relation to functionality. The result: too much light, flat
lighting, dark countertops.
- A spotlight above your head by the mirror —dark
circles under your eyes guaranteed. The light by the mirror should
fall on your face, not the top of your head.

Mixed colors and angles – 3000 K next to 4000 K and 36° next to
110° in a single ceiling looks like a renovation done in
installments.

No circuit separation – twenty
lights on a single switch is an “all or nothing” choice. Categories:
General / Accents / Countertops.
- The cheapest fixtures with a harsh light source –
the difference between a fixture for 15 PLN and a decent one for
40–60 PLN lies in the glare and the durability of the clips.
- Cutting holes before the installation project – wires must reach
every point. Corrections are often impossible in a finished ceiling.
Dimming, ceiling insulation (IC), and compatibility
Two technical issues that are easy to overlook but can ruin the entire
effect:
Dimming. If the lights are to be dimmed, you need dimmable GU10
bulbs and a dimmer compatible with LEDs:
- Choose trailing-edge dimmers (they work better with LEDs than
older leading-edge models),
- pay attention to the dimmer’s minimum load —a few bulbs at 4–5
W each may not reach the threshold, causing the light to flicker or
hum,
- do not mix light sources from different manufacturers on the same
circuit—this makes incompatibility and flickering more likely.
Ceiling insulation. If there is wool/insulation above the
suspended ceiling (e.g. attic), a standard recessed fixture may
overheat. In that case, look for fixtures marked "IC" (insulation
contact), which are approved for contact with insulation, or maintain
the distance from the material specified by the manufacturer.
Also check the installation depth —not every fixture will fit above
a thin ceiling. “slim” models are designed for shallow spaces, but even
they require room for the power supply and wiring.
Summary
Good ceiling spotlights aren’t about a grid, but a plan: fixtures 30–60
cm from walls, spaced at about half the room’s height, one GU10 spot per
1.5–3 m² depending on function, one color per room, and directional
spots wherever light needs to work on walls and countertops. Add a
dimmer and zone control, and a ceiling full of spotlights will become a
