The Lipsi is a table lamp with a bulbous terracotta base, finished in a natural concrete grey and wrapped in a grid of light, woven strips. A cylindrical shade of woven grass sits on the base, ending in a loose fringe at the bottom. The lamp is handmade in Indonesia for the Belgian brand Bazar Bizar.
Size and where it fits
The lamp is 48 cm tall and 30 cm in diameter — the base and shade are of similar width, so plan for a circle at least 30 cm across on the surface. The maker intends it for a console table in the hallway or for a nightstand; on a nightstand, compare those 30 cm with the depth of its top.
Connection and light
The lamp comes wired: it has a cable with a Type C plug that fits an ordinary wall socket, and an E27 holder for a standard bulb. A switch is visible on the cable, so the lamp can be turned on without reaching under the shade. The maker recommends a soft-light bulb — the woven shade then diffuses it into a warm, muted glow, and through the open top and bottom of the cylinder some light falls onto the surface and up towards the ceiling.
Materials and care
The base is terracotta and the shade is grass. Both materials are natural and worked by hand, so the tone of the base and the density of the weave vary slightly from piece to piece. The lamp is for indoor use only.
Wipe the base with a soft, dry cloth and clean the shade and woven parts gently with a soft brush. The maker advises keeping the lamp away from humidity, direct heat and water — grass and terracotta do not cope well with damp, so a bathroom is not the place for it.
The raw texture of the grass, the fringe and the grey terracotta give the lamp a boho character. It suits a living room and bedroom, as well as a hallway, dining room and hotel or restaurant interiors.
