The FERNE Brene FBRK558 is a lightweight plastic chair whose back and seat are formed from a dense run of narrow slats. The senza finish is a light, warm beige (Pantone 7535 C) with a matt smooth surface. The chair weighs very little, stacks, and can be left out on a terrace without concern — the plastic does not absorb moisture.
Form and inspiration
The Brene collection was developed by FERNE with the design studio KABO & PYDO and refers back to the bentwood tradition that grew up around Bielsko-Biała from the early twentieth century, following Michael Thonet's method. Instead of steam-bent beech, though, this is plastic moulded in a single piece: the rhythmic run of slats does the job that thin wooden rods did on a classic Thonet chair. The design took two international awards in 2025 — the iF DESIGN AWARD and the German Design Award.
Sitting comfort
The backrest slats fan outwards and lean back slightly, so the spine is supported naturally without a cushion. The seat is 40 cm deep and 37.5 cm wide, and its front edge sits 46 cm above the floor — standard dining height, matching tables with a 74–76 cm top. The gaps between the slats let air through, which makes summer sitting noticeably cooler than a solid shell, and after rain the water simply runs off instead of pooling.
Dimensions and load
The chair occupies 52 cm across and 53 cm front to back, standing 82.5 cm tall overall. The manufacturer states a maximum load of 110 kg. The construction is stackable, so a whole set can be piled up and tucked into a garage or a corner of the terrace out of season. For wholesale transport they are packed 24 to a unit, with a pallet stack of roughly 170 cm.
Indoors and outdoors
Brene is not only garden furniture. The plastic is moisture-resistant, so the chair works on a terrace, in a garden and in hospitality settings, but it looks equally at home at a dining table or in a kitchen. The collection's coherent palette invites mixing — several chairs in senza alongside one in retro red, for instance — without the result looking accidental.
Care
The smooth matt surface has no seams or joints for dirt to collect in. Water with a mild detergent and a soft cloth are enough to clean it; avoid solvents and aggressive abrasives. The plastic FERNE uses is fully recyclable.
The Brene collection
Besides this chair, the collection includes a chair with armrests (FBRK658), an armchair (FBRK767), a bar chair (FBRK5510) and three tables: side (FBRS554), coffee (FBRS884) and dining (FBRS888). All are offered in six colours: senza, retro red, verde, white, agate gray and carbon.
