Flush Ceiling Light RIO 78 ochre red LED 4000K

RIO 78 is a flush ceiling light built as a closed ring of aluminium finished in matt ochre red. The ring is not held in the middle: it meets the ceiling through a round canopy set at its edge, so the body reaches past the outline of the circle. Light leaves the inner edge of the ring and is aimed downwards.

How much ceiling it takes up

The ring itself is 78 cm across, but with the canopy the fitting spans 84 cm at its widest. That second figure is the one to measure against your free ceiling area, because it is the one the manufacturer's drawing dimensions. It stands 13 cm off the ceiling, so it does not noticeably lower the room and fits where a pendant would hang too low.

The fitting weighs 5.55 kg. On a plasterboard ceiling that means fixing into the supporting structure rather than into the board.

The light it gives

A 33 W LED module produces 3907 lm, close to five times what an old 60 W bulb gave (about 800 lm), so it carries a room as the main light rather than adding to one. At 4000 K the light is neutral white with no yellow cast, nearer daylight than a warm tone.

Colour rendering reaches Ra 98. At that figure the colours of walls, furniture and fabrics read almost as they do in daylight, which matters over a kitchen worktop and anywhere a colour has to be judged rather than simply seen. The light source is built in permanently and supplied with the fitting, so there is no bulb to buy and none you can change yourself later.

Wiring and where it belongs

The fitting is protection class I: the ceiling box needs an earth conductor, because the terminal block on the mounting drawing carries a separate earth terminal alongside L and N. An IP20 rating assumes dry rooms only, so it is not intended for a bathroom shower zone or for outdoors.

The body is powder-coated aluminium. The manufacturer intends RIO 78 for a living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room and hallway, wherever light should be even and come from one point. The form is modern: a plain ring, one colour throughout, and the round canopy as the only visible fitting.
