This is a five-metre reel of COB LED strip from LED Labs' OPTI series. Instead of individual diodes spaced several millimetres apart, a COB strip carries a phosphor layer running the whole length - it lights as a continuous, even line, with no visible points and none of the dotting a strip normally casts on a wall or inside a profile.
Why COB rather than SMD
On an SMD strip the separate diodes are visible, and if the profile is shallow or the cover sits too close, a row of bright points reflects onto the wall. COB (Chip on Board) solves that physically: 480 tiny emitters per metre - 2400 across the reel - sit under one shared phosphor layer. The result is a line of light that can be built into a very shallow aluminium profile without a frosted diffuser. It shows in ceiling coves, under kitchen cabinets and in shadow-gap trims, where the strip is seen at an angle.
Light output
The strip gives 850 lumens per metre for 10 W, an efficacy of 85 lm/W. The whole reel is about 4250 lm - enough to light a kitchen worktop end to end or outline the ceiling of a medium room. At 3000 K the light is warm and calm, and colour rendering exceeds 90, which is still not standard in LED strip; the declared red component R9 is 42. At that CRI, wood, brick and fabric keep their real colour - which is why this series goes into furniture and display lighting rather than purely technical installations.
Supply and control
The strip runs on 12 V DC and needs a separate driver - LED Labs does not include one with the reel. A full reel draws 50 W, so the driver is chosen with at least 20% headroom: 60 W minimum at 12 V, that is 5 A. At 12 V the voltage drop over a long run is more pronounced than at 24 V, so feed a five-metre length from one end, and wire two such lengths in parallel to the driver rather than in series one after the other. Dimming is possible but only with a dedicated 12 V PWM controller - not with a 230 V wall dimmer.
Cutting and mounting
The strip can be shortened every 25 mm at the marked points - a fine enough pitch that fitting a given recess rarely calls for a compromise. It is 8 mm wide and 3 mm thick, so it goes into most standard aluminium profiles. The underside carries factory-applied double-sided Blue Tape; the surface must be degreased before sticking, and inside an aluminium profile the adhesive is a helper rather than the fixing. The carrier is PCB laminate with 2 oz copper - twice the thickness of cheap strip; heavier copper carries heat away better, which feeds straight into diode life.
Lifetime, sealing and warranty
The manufacturer quotes 35,000 hours to L70/B50 - meaning that after that time half the samples still hold at least 70% of initial output. At three hours a day that works out at roughly 31 years. The strip takes over 30,000 switching cycles and runs from -20 to +45 °C. IP20 means no moisture protection at all: this strip belongs in dry interiors only - for a bathroom, outdoors or a worktop beside a sink, pick the IP65 or IP65 HS version of the same series. The warranty is 3 years.
Variants
The same OPTI 12 V 2400 LED COB 10 W model comes in three colour temperatures: 3000 K (this version), 4000 K and 6500 K. The series also runs to IP65 and IP65 HS equivalents. The strip is sold in full five-metre packs.
