RON 55/30 is a large cylindrical textile shade, 55 cm across and 30 cm tall. The outer fabric is chintz in light grey — cotton with a smooth, faintly satin finish that does not crease into hard folds and holds a true cylinder. The inside is lined in white PVC, so light bounces off a pale surface instead of being absorbed by the grey cloth.

Worth stating plainly, because it decides the purchase: RON 55/30 is only a shade. There is no cable, no lampholder, no transformer and no lamp. It carries an E27 fitting and is designed to combine with Rendl bases, pendant sets and stands — the manufacturer names the HEX, ELISA, ENZO, LISA, POSTE, TRIX and KOMBIX ranges. If you are buying the shade for a lamp you already own, check first that its fitting is E27.

An open cylinder, and an optional diffuser

A cylindrical shade throws light two ways: strongly downwards and upwards through the open ends. Over a table that gives a concentrated pool on the surface while also lifting the ceiling. If looking straight at the lamp is uncomfortable — at a low drop, for instance — Rendl offers a separately ordered PMMA diffuser, part numbers G11868 and G12300, which closes the lower opening and scatters the light.

Wattage and choosing a lamp

The manufacturer permits a lamp of up to 23 W. For a modern E27 LED that is a great deal — 23 W of LED is roughly the old 150 W incandescent — so the limit is not a practical constraint. What matters more is that a textile shade should not house a lamp that runs hot, and at this ceiling halogen and traditional filaments rule themselves out.

RON 55/30 comes in several fabric versions with identical dimensions: Monaco in dove grey and in petrol blue (both silver-lined), white polycotton with white PVC, black polycotton lined in copper or gold foil, and chintz in apricot, orange and lime. As the dimensions are shared, the shade can be swapped for another colour without changing the base.
