Linara pendant light Quintiesse 3 x E27, black slatted shade, natural brass

Linara is a pendant light with a drum shade built from narrow, vertical black steel slats, designed by Kichler and sold in Europe under the Quintiesse label of the Elstead Lighting group. The shade widens slightly towards the bottom. The suspension rods, ceiling plate and the cluster of three sockets inside are finished in natural brass, which shows between the black slats.

How big it is and how low it hangs

The shade is 470 mm across and 244 mm tall. Compare the diameter with the width of your table or the free space beneath — over a dining table, the lower edge of the shade usually hangs 70–80 cm above the top so the light stays out of seated people's eyes.

The lamp hangs on rigid rods rather than a cable. Two 305 mm and two 152 mm rods are included, giving an overall length from 276 to 1188 mm, set during installation in steps of about 15 cm. Subtract the chosen length from your ceiling height to get the clearance under the shade. The fitting weighs 5.52 kg and is class I, so an earth conductor has to reach the ceiling box — worth checking, particularly in older wiring.

Which bulbs you need to buy

There are three E27 sockets, each rated for a lamp of up to 75 W. Bulbs are not included — the manufacturer's photos show them fitted, but they are not part of the set. The slats leave gaps, so the bulbs stay visible from the side and their shape becomes part of the lamp's look. Three lamps of around 800 lm together give light similar to three old 60 W bulbs.

Light leaves through the gaps between the slats and through the open bottom of the shade. Dimming works only with bulbs marked as dimmable and a dimmer in the circuit. The lamp runs on 220–240 V mains and is wired permanently into the ceiling box.

Build and intended use

Shade and rods are steel; black and natural brass are finish colours, not separate materials. The manufacturer describes the style as retro, inspired by mid-century design, and names the living room and dining room. The lamp is for indoor use only and comes with a two-year guarantee.
