Chance pendant light Quintiesse 3 x E27, heritage brass, opal glass

Chance is a pendant light with a drum shade shaped like a four-leaf clover, designed by Hinkley and sold in Europe under the Quintiesse label of the Elstead Lighting group. The steel body is finished in heritage brass — a warm, golden tone with a brushed grain and slight shading. A panel of matt opal glass with a scalloped edge closes the shade underneath, and the whole fitting hangs from three chains gathered into a ring below a round ceiling plate.

How big it is and how low it hangs

The shade measures 559 mm across, and the fitting including its three support chains is 673 mm tall. Compare the diameter with the width of your table or the free space beneath: over a table, the lower edge of the shade usually hangs 70–80 cm above the top so the light stays out of seated people's eyes.

Overall length, from the ceiling to the lower edge, ranges from 773 to 2297 mm. The chain is 1524 mm long and the height is set during installation by shortening it. Subtract 77.3 cm from your ceiling height to get the smallest possible clearance under the lamp with the chain fully shortened.

Which bulbs you need to buy

The fitting has three E27 sockets, each rated for a lamp of up to 100 W. Bulbs are not included, so you choose colour and brightness yourself — three lamps of around 800 lm together give light similar to three old 60 W bulbs, and for a living room or bedroom 2700–3000 K, a warm, slightly yellow light, is the usual choice.

The drum sides are solid metal, so light leaves downwards through the diffusing opal glass rather than sideways. The lamp can be dimmed, but only with bulbs marked as dimmable and a dimmer in the circuit — the fitting has no control gear of its own. It runs on 220–240 V mains and is wired permanently into the ceiling box.

Build and intended use

The shade is made of four curved steel segments separated by vertical ribs and held together by bands with visible rivets. The bottom glass is matt, so the bulbs are not visible through it. The manufacturer describes the style as transitional: a classic clover outline combined with plain rivets and chain.

The lamp is intended for indoor use, and the manufacturer names the living room and bedroom. It comes with a two-year guarantee. The same model is also available in blackened brass.
