The NOOK SENSOR 7964 is an outdoor ceiling light made up of a flat graphite base and a clear polycarbonate shade shaped like a droplet. The lamp stays visible inside it, and a motion sensor built into the fitting switches the light on without anyone touching a switch.

How big it is and how it is mounted

The base is 18 cm across and the whole fitting stands 15.5 cm out from the mounting surface — the figure to compare with the clearance above your door or under your soffit. The manufacturer specifies direct mounting: the base screws straight onto the ceiling or the wall.

The fitting is Class II, so no earth conductor is needed. No mounting kit is supplied — plugs and screws are chosen to suit your own substrate.

What lamp it takes

Inside there is one E27 lampholder rated at a maximum of 10 W, and the manufacturer permits LED lamps only. An incandescent or halogen bulb of the same wattage is ruled out, so look for one described as LED. No lamp is supplied, which leaves the colour and the brightness to you.

The lamp can be replaced, and the manufacturer has built a lock into the holder that stops it being unscrewed by a passer-by — which matters on a fitting mounted low over an entrance or in an externally accessible stairwell.

How the motion sensor works

The sensor is part of the fitting, not a separate device to buy. The manufacturer's technical drawing gives a detection range of 8 m — the distance to compare with the length of the approach to your door or the width of your terrace, because beyond it the light will not come on.

Where it can be mounted

The manufacturer specifies outdoor use only. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction — angled rain, in other words — but not against a jet of water. The fitting also carries IK09 mechanical impact protection, so the sensible places are an entrance, a facade, a terrace or a balcony rather than a poolside or a bathroom.

The body is ABS and the shade is polycarbonate. The fitting runs on 220–230 V at 50/60 Hz, that is on an ordinary domestic circuit.
