Porter in the largest of its three sizes is a wall lantern built to read like a forged antique without behaving like one. A slim, upright body 564 mm tall sits in an aluminium frame finished in aged zinc, and four panes of clear glass leave the inside of the fitting on show. The Porter family was designed by Lisa McDennon for Hinkley and is offered across Europe under Quintiesse, the brand of British manufacturer Elstead Lighting.
The bracket and its ring
This lantern does not hang from an ordinary arm. A rectangular plate fixes it to the wall, a short bracket reaches out from that plate, and the glazed body hangs from a heavy open ring. That single detail gives the model its forged-lantern character while the proportions stay contemporary: a narrow vertical box with sharply drawn frame edges. The fitting projects 210 mm from the wall and measures 165 mm across, so despite its 564 mm height it does not crowd a doorway.
Light and lamp
There is one light point on an E27 socket, running on 220–240 V / 50 Hz mains. Maximum lamp power is 60 W. No lamp is supplied and there is no integrated LED module, so you choose the bulb yourself and can change it later without taking the lantern down. The clear glass does not diffuse, which leaves the bulb itself visible — if you want the look from the catalogue photographs, fit a decorative retro lamp with an exposed filament. The manufacturer states the fitting works on a dimmer provided the lamp you fit is dimmable.
Build and weather resistance
Body and bracket are aluminium, the shade is glass. Aluminium does not rust, which matters more on a fitting left permanently outdoors than the weight of the metal itself. IP44 means protection against solid objects of 1 mm and larger and against splashing water from any direction, so the lantern can sit on an exposed wall and take rain. Quintiesse covers this model with a three-year anti-corrosion guarantee.
Where Porter works
This is a facade fitting: beside a front door, flanking a garage entrance, on a terrace wall or along a passage next to the house. At 564 mm the L version is a visible part of the elevation and looks best on a large, uninterrupted stretch of wall, or in a symmetrical pair either side of an entrance. Where the wall is narrower, or the light is only meant to mark a path, the same family offers medium and small versions.
