s.luce Orb is a pendant light with a mouth-blown glass globe 20 cm across. The glass is graduated: a mirrored smoke tone at the top fades into clear glass towards the bottom. The globe hangs on a black fabric-braided cable.

How big it is and how low it hangs

The globe is 20 cm in diameter, and the suspension lets it down 150 cm below the ceiling at most; the surplus is shortened during installation. Over a dining table the lower edge is usually set 70-80 cm above the top — the light then covers the table surface without shining into the eyes of anyone seated.

Twenty centimetres is the smallest of the four Orb diameters. The manufacturer intends the fittings to be combined in sets of different sizes and drops, so a globe this size works in a group over a longer top rather than on its own over a whole room.

Which lamp to choose

Inside the globe is one E27 lampholder for a lamp of up to 40 W. No lamp is supplied, so you choose colour and brightness yourself. It dims, but only through the lamp — the manufacturer states dimming with a suitable light source, and the fitting has no control gear of its own.

The graduation has a practical consequence: the mirrored top throws the light downwards while the clear lower half lets it through undiffused, so the filament stays visible through the glass. A globe like this is therefore usually fitted with a decorative lamp, because the lamp is part of what you see.

Build and connection

The glass is blown by mouth, so the pattern of the graduation comes out slightly different on every piece — the manufacturer describes each fitting as a one-off. The metal parts of the fitting and the whole suspension are black, as is the cable.

It runs on 230 V as a class I fitting, so the installation at the mounting point has to carry a protective earth conductor. It weighs 2.22 kg, and the manufacturer packs it without plastic, in recyclable materials.
