s.luce Velo 5-Light Pendant Lamp, Multicoloured Glass, White Canopy Ø 60 cm

Velo is a five-light pendant: five mouth-blown shades in vertically ribbed glass hang on white fabric cables from a single round canopy 60 cm across. In this version the glasses come in three colours at once — brown, clear and smoke — while the canopy and the cables are white.

How it is hung

The canopy measures 60 cm in diameter and 4 cm deep, and its five cable outlets are fixed: the pattern the shades make on the ceiling is set, and only their heights can be changed. The cables are 500 cm each and are shortened individually, so the shades can be staggered into a cascade or levelled off.

That length says what the lamp is meant for: voids open to the floor above, stairwells and galleries, where the drop is counted in metres. In a room of ordinary height most of the cable will be cut away.

s.luce gives a shipping weight of 25.5 kg, and the fitting is Class I — it needs a working earth conductor at the ceiling box and a fixing rated for that weight, not simply a hook.

The glass and the colours

Each shade is 25 cm across and 27 cm tall, vertically ribbed and open at the bottom. The glass is mouth-blown, so the pattern of the ribs and the depth of the tint do not repeat millimetre for millimetre from piece to piece.

In this variant the maker combines brown, clear and smoke glass in one set of five shades — it is not a single-colour set. The metalwork and the cables are white, which reads against the darker glasses and disappears into a pale ceiling.

How much light it gives and which bulbs to buy

The five E27 sockets take bulbs of up to 40 W each. No bulbs are supplied, so they are bought separately: around 800 lm from one shade matches the old 60 W bulb, and five such points will light a whole stairwell.

The shades are open at the bottom and partly translucent, so the bulb is visible — its shape is part of how the lamp looks. The fitting can be dimmed, but only with suitable dimmable bulbs; it carries no dimming electronics of its own.
