Taper is a large outdoor wall lantern by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting: a flat, rectangular body with a deep recess in the front that hides the LED module. The housing is made of weather-resistant composite in a textured black finish.
Size and mounting
The lantern is 61 cm high and 22.9 cm wide, and projects only 9.8 cm from the wall. The flat profile matters beside a narrow passage along the facade or next to a door whose leaf opens alongside it. Compare the height with the free strip of wall between the door frame and a downpipe or corner. It weighs 2.87 kg.
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the manufacturer specifies it for outdoor use. It is a Class I fitting — it must be connected to a protective earth.
What light it gives
The light source is a 10.5 W integrated LED module that cannot be swapped like a bulb — there is nothing to buy separately. It gives 860 lm, slightly more than an old 60 W bulb, at 3000 K, a warm white. A CRI above 80 means sound colour rendering.
The module is hidden in the top of the recess and shines downward, with the light fading gradually along the tapering inner surface. The LED itself cannot be seen from the front, so the lantern does not dazzle someone standing at the door.
Style and use
Taper has a minimalist, modern form with no ornament: a straight frame and a single angled plane. It suits a house facade, an entrance and a garden, as well as the entrance of a hotel or restaurant.
