Republic Elstead Outdoor Wall Lantern – Small, Black

Republic in the small size is an outdoor wall lantern built on a double frame: a second, open frame of black square profiles wraps around the glazed body. The panes are clear seedy glass — transparent, with air bubbles visible in the material. A decorative loop sits on top and a flat wall plate on the side. The lantern is designed by Hinkley and supplied to the European market by Elstead Lighting.

Size and where it mounts

The fitting stands 305 mm tall, measures 178 mm across and projects 173 mm from the wall. That last figure is the one to compare against the space beside your front door: at 173 mm the lantern stays clear of the doorway, but it needs a strip of wall with no downpipe and no architrave in the way.

The wall plate sits flush across its whole face, so the surface behind it has to be flat — on a building corner or a moulded band the lantern will not seat squarely. At 2.55 kg it stays within what ordinary plugs in brick and concrete will hold.

What lamp it takes

Republic takes a single E27 lamp rated up to 60 W. No bulb is supplied, so the colour and brightness are yours to choose. The maker recommends decorative lamps with a visible filament for this lantern: the glass is clear, so the lamp itself shows from outside and sets the look of the fitting once it is lit.

The lantern can be dimmed, but that needs a dimmer in the circuit and a lamp marked as dimmable — the fitting carries no control gear of its own.

Working outdoors

The body is made of weather-resistant composite, treated additionally with an anti-fading agent. The maker states resistance to rust and corrosion and allows mounting in a coastal setting, where salt air attacks ordinary steel fittings faster than rain does.

IP44 protection means the lantern is guarded against splashing water from any direction, so it will take rain on an exposed facade. The fitting is Class I: the box beside the door has to carry an earth conductor, otherwise the installation does not meet the regulations. It runs on 220–240 V mains. The maker covers the lantern with a five-year guarantee.
