The medium Republic wall lantern by Hinkley has a slim, box-like form: a black frame with a double outline, glazed on three sides with clear seeded glass, and a square ring handle on top. The body is weather-resistant composite. It is distributed by Elstead Lighting.
Size and mounting position
The lantern is 40.6 cm high, 17.8 cm wide and projects 17.3 cm. That suits a front door, either side of a garage door, or a facade along a path — usually two are fitted symmetrically. Compare 40.6 cm with the height of your door frame: a lantern beside a door looks in proportion at roughly a quarter to a third of its height.
IP44 protects against rain and splashes from any direction, and the manufacturer states sea-water resistance, so it also works by the coast. It carries a 5-year guarantee. Weight 2.55 kg; Class I, earth conductor required.
Bulb and light
Inside is one E27 socket for a bulb of up to 60 W, none supplied. The clear seeded glass does not hide the bulb, which is why the manufacturer shows the lantern with a decorative elongated filament bulb. For an entrance, an LED bulb of 470–800 lm at warm 2700 K is enough. The fitting works with dimmable bulbs.
Style
The frame's clean geometry and classic lantern shape sit well on both modern and traditional facades. The Republic series also includes an outdoor flush light and a pedestal lantern.
