The medium Republic pedestal lantern by Hinkley is a square lantern with a black double-outline frame, glazed on four sides with clear seeded glass, with a ring handle on top and a flat foot for mounting on a horizontal surface. The body is weather-resistant composite. It is distributed by Elstead Lighting.
Where it goes
The lantern is fixed on top of a post, low wall or gate pier — the manufacturer's photos show it on brick piers by a terrace. It is 41.9 cm high and its foot takes up 20.2 × 17.2 cm; compare that with the top of the pier it will stand on. It weighs 1.7 kg.
IP44 protects against rain and splashes from any direction, and the manufacturer states sea-water resistance. It carries a 5-year guarantee. It is Class I — an earthed supply cable must be brought to the mounting point, ideally by an electrician.
Bulb and light
Inside is one E27 socket for a bulb of up to 60 W; none is supplied. The glass is clear, so the bulb shows — the manufacturer uses an elongated decorative filament bulb. On a pier by a driveway or path, an LED bulb of about 470–800 lm at 2700 K marks the way without glare. The fitting works with dimmable bulbs.
Style and series
A classic lantern with a plain, geometric frame suits brick, stone and concrete walls. The same design can light the entrance (Republic wall lantern) and a covered terrace (Republic flush lantern).
