Chicago is a free-standing garden lantern 115 cm tall: a classic lantern head with clear seeded glass, set on a slim post with a wide foot. The body is cast aluminium in a textured black finish, and the roof of the head is topped with a turned finial.
Size and where it stands
The lantern is 115 cm high, 23.5 cm in diameter at its widest point and weighs 3.37 kg. Compare these figures with the width of the bed along your path or driveway and with the height of the plants that will grow beside it – the light comes from the head at the very top of the post.
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, which is why the manufacturer specifies the lantern for outdoor use. It is a Class I fitting: it must be connected to a protective earth, so the spot where it stands needs a 230 V supply with an earth conductor.
Which lamp to choose
The head has one E27 socket for a lamp of up to 60 W. No lamp is included. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps, so dimming needs such a lamp and a dimmer.
The glass is clear, so the lamp stays visible through it – its shape and filament become part of the lantern's look. The manufacturer suggests an Edison-style LED lamp with a clear bulb: 7 W, 800 lm and 3000 K, which is the brightness of an old 60 W bulb in warm white.
The Chicago range
Chicago is an Elstead Lighting range of aluminium lanterns in the classic style of the turn of the 20th century: a shaped roof, a decorative finial and a post with turned rings. In the same finish the range includes wall lanterns, a chain lantern, a pedestal lantern and a taller lamp post, so an entrance, a facade and a garden can be lit in one style. The lantern is intended for gardens and for the entrance of a hotel or restaurant.
