The Republic flush lantern is a Hinkley outdoor fitting mounted directly to the ceiling: a square black frame with a double outline at the base, holding four panes of clear glass with fine air bubbles. The body is made of weather-resistant composite. It is distributed by Elstead Lighting.
Where to fit it
The lantern measures 27.9 × 27.9 cm and is only 16.5 cm deep, so it fits under the roof of a covered terrace, veranda or porch where a hanging lantern would be in the way. IP44 protects it from splashing water from any direction, and the manufacturer states resistance to sea water — it also suits homes near the coast. The fitting carries a 5-year guarantee.
The fitting weighs 2.6 kg and is Class I, so the earth conductor must be connected. Outdoor wiring should be done by an electrician.
Bulbs and light
Inside are two E27 sockets for bulbs of up to 40 W each; no bulbs are included. The seeded glass is clear, so the bulbs are visible — the manufacturer's photos use decorative filament bulbs, which suit a lantern like this. Two LED bulbs of about 470 lm at 2700 K light an entrance with warm light without glare. The fitting works with dimmable bulbs.
Style and series
A plain, geometric frame with a double outline is a classic lantern form that pairs easily with black window frames. The Republic series also includes a wall lantern and a pedestal lantern in the same finish, so one design can cover the entrance, terrace and driveway.
