Chapel Hill is an outdoor half wall lantern: its flat back sits against the wall, with clear glass panes at the front and sides. The aluminium body is finished in matt Museum Black and topped by a steep, curved roof with a ball finial. It was designed by the American brand Hinkley after the lanterns of old carriage houses and is distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and where to mount it
The lantern is 39.4 cm tall and 21.6 cm wide and projects only 15.2 cm from the wall. That shallow projection matters in a narrow passage and beside doors that open outwards – the fitting does not reach into the walkway the way a full lantern on a bracket does. Compare the width with the gap between the door frame and a downpipe or window.
The IP44 rating protects it against water splashing from any direction, and the manufacturer lists it for exterior use – beside the front door, on a porch and on the facade of a house. The lantern weighs 2 kg. Protection class I means it must be connected with a protective earth conductor, so the outdoor installation is a job for an electrician.
Which bulbs it needs
Inside are two arms ending in E14 lampholders, each for a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulbs are included, so two need to be bought separately. The panes are clear and the bulbs stay on show – the manufacturer suggests separately sold LED candle lamps with a clear glass envelope. The fitting works with dimmable lamps: with a dimmer, both bulbs need to be marked as dimmable.
Look and construction
A dentil frieze runs beneath the roof and the pane frames form straight, angular lines – the close-ups also show the matt, slightly rough surface of the black finish. The classic shape suits traditional architecture: a brick house, light-coloured render or a panelled timber door. Because the back is flat, the lantern looks as if it has been cut in half, so it takes up less room on the wall than a full lantern of the same height.
