Carlson is an outdoor wall lantern with a square aluminium body finished in a dark, rubbed bronze. The panes are filled with seeded glass, and an arched arm curves over the top of the lantern. One side pane sits on hinges and opens like a door.
How much wall it needs
The lantern stands 279 mm tall and 157 mm wide, and projects 108 mm from the wall. The mounting back plate is wider than the body itself at 171 x 171 mm, so it is the back plate that sets the flat stretch of wall the fitting needs. Compare that figure with the gap you actually have between your door frame and the nearest obstruction.
For mounting on a corner the manufacturer offers a separate bracket, C-BKT2-BROWN or C-BKT2-BLACK. It is not in the box, so an entrance wall that is not flat means buying one on top.
Which lamp you need to buy
The fitting takes one E27 lamp of up to 60 W. No lamp is supplied, so you buy it separately — and with it you choose the colour and brightness of the light, because the lantern itself does not fix either.
The manufacturer allows dimmable lamps. The lantern carries no dimming gear of its own, so any dimming depends on the lamp you fit and on the dimmer in the circuit. The hinged side pane means the lamp can be changed without taking the lantern off the wall.
Outdoors and wiring
An IP44 rating means protection against solid objects from 1 mm upwards and against splashing water from any direction. The lantern can therefore hang on an exposed wall and take rain, but it is not built for a pressure-washer jet.
It is a Class I fitting, which means an earth conductor has to reach its body. If the box by your door carries only two cores, the installation needs an earth run to it first. Supply is 220-240 V mains and the lantern weighs 1.39 kg. The manufacturer covers it with a three-year guarantee. The model is designed by Kichler and supplied by Elstead Lighting.
