Alderley Pendant / Semi-Flush Ceiling Light - 2 light sources - Vintage Bronze Elstead

Alderley is a Tiffany-style light with an inverted square-pyramid shade made of panels of art glass. Radiating strips of milky white glass are crossed by blue and textured clear panels, and the metal parts – steel rods, a square ceiling plate and the finial beneath the shade – have a Vintage Bronze finish, a dark bronze. It belongs to the own range of the British company Elstead Lighting.

Two ways to mount it

The manufacturer calls this a trio-mount fitting: at installation you decide whether it hangs on rods as a pendant or sits close to the ceiling as a semi-flush light. Two 15.2 cm rods and two 30.4 cm rods are supplied, and the overall drop runs from 25.5 to 116.7 cm. The height is set once, during installation – it is not adjusted afterwards.

The shade measures 38 × 38 cm and is 18.5 cm tall. With a low ceiling or in a passage the close-to-ceiling option works well; over a table the drop is usually chosen so the lower edge of the shade sits 70–80 cm above the top.

Bulbs and the character of the light

Under the shade are two E27 lampholders for bulbs of up to 60 W each. No bulbs are included. Stained art glass lets through less light than clear glass and tints it – the lamp gives soft, coloured mood light rather than strong task light. Two bulbs of about 800 lm each, equal to old 60 W bulbs, give clearly more light than one would.

The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps – dimming needs a dimmer and bulbs marked as dimmable. It is a Class I fitting, so the protective earth must be connected, and it is intended for indoor use only.

Style and where it fits

In the Alderley range Elstead combines the Tiffany technique with art deco geometry: straight, radiating lines instead of plant motifs, and a restrained palette of white, blue and clear glass. The manufacturer intends the light for the living room, dining room, study, bedroom and walk-in wardrobe. The same range includes a single-light pendant, a wall uplighter and table lamps in three sizes.
