This is a 5-metre reel of COB LED strip — instead of a row of separate diodes on the board there is a continuous band of phosphor covering hundreds of microscopic chips. There are 320 light points per metre, so 1600 across the reel.
Why COB rather than an ordinary SMD strip
The difference shows the moment it is switched on: a COB strip lights as a continuous line with no dots. On a classic SMD strip the individual diodes reflect in the worktop, in glass and in any glossy surface, producing a row of points. COB does not, which is why it earns its place wherever the strip is visible or shines onto something shiny — under kitchen cabinets, in a recess, along a mirror, inside a profile without a frosted cover.
True colours: Ra ≥ 90
The colour rendering index here is at least 90, where a typical utility strip manages 80. In a kitchen that is not an academic figure: at Ra 80 raw meat, vegetables and bread look grey and flat; at Ra 90 they keep their natural colour. 3000 K is a warm white, close to a traditional incandescent lamp.
What else you need
The strip runs on 24 V DC, so it does not connect straight to a socket — a 24 V driver is required and is not included. The whole reel draws 40 W (8 W per metre), so for the full 5 metres choose a supply of at least 48 W, leaving roughly 20% headroom. If you plan to dim it, the dimmer also has to be a 24 V DC type.
Why 24 V and not 12 V
At the same power, a 24 V strip draws half the current of a 12 V one. That means less voltage drop along its length, so a longer run can be fed from one point without the far end visibly dimming, and the supply cables can be thinner — easier to hide.
Cutting and mounting
The strip can be shortened, but only at the designated points — every 100 mm, at the marked solder pads. That matters when planning: any length will be a multiple of 10 cm, so measure the recess first. The board is 8 mm wide on a 2 oz copper substrate that carries heat away; a double-sided thermally conductive adhesive is applied underneath. The mounting surface must be clean and degreased, and over longer runs an aluminium profile is worth using — cooling translates directly into lifetime.
Durability and lifetime
IP20 means no water protection whatsoever — the strip is for dry interiors only, not for a shower zone and not outdoors. The manufacturer declares an L70/B50 lifetime of 35,000 hours (after which half the strips still hold at least 70% of their initial brightness), over 35,000 switching cycles, and an operating range of −20 to +45 °C. The warranty is 3 years.
