Ashland Bay is an outdoor pedestal lantern by Kichler, distributed by Elstead Lighting — the medium size of the family. An aluminium body in a burnished bronze finish forms a cage of upright rods around a cylinder of ribbed, clear seeded glass. A domed hood with a loop handle closes the top, and a short stem with a round base carries it at the bottom.
Where to put it
The lantern is 47.1 cm tall and 19.3 cm in diameter, and its mounting base measures 17 cm. That is the figure to compare with the spot it will stand on — the top of a low wall or a gate pier, for example, has to take the whole base. The fitting weighs 2.7 kg.
IP44 means protection against water splashing from any direction, so the lantern can stand outdoors in the rain. It is Class I and must be connected to the protective earth, so a power supply has to be brought to the mounting point.
Which bulb
Inside is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The glass is clear, so the bulb stays visible — the manufacturer suggests LED Edison-style bulbs with a visible filament to suit the traditional form of the lantern. The fitting works with dimmable lamps: to control brightness you need a dimmable bulb and a dimmer.
Finish and style
Burnished bronze is a warm, mid-brown metal tone with lighter rubbed highlights on the raised edges — a different finish from dark oxidised bronze. The lantern has a traditional, colonial-inspired form with ribbed glass and a loop on the hood. In the same size Ashland Bay is also available in weathered zinc, and the family includes wall lanterns as well.
