Helsingor is a 100 cm garden bollard from Elstead Lighting's own range, topped by a lantern with three round hoods stacked over a clear glass cylinder. A PIR motion sensor sits in the base of the lantern, below the glass. The whole fitting is made of 304 stainless steel, powder-coated black.
Size and installation
The bollard stands 100 cm tall and its lantern is 21.8 cm wide – a height at which the light falls on a path or driveway from hip level rather than from street-lamp height. The round foot with screw holes is bolted to a firm surface such as a concrete footing or paving. It weighs 2.98 kg.
The IP44 rating protects it against splashing water from any direction, and the maker specifies it for exterior use. It is a class I fitting, so the supply cable must include a protective earth conductor.
Motion sensor and light source
A PIR sensor responds to the body heat of a person moving nearby and switches the light on when someone approaches, so the bollard does not burn all night for nothing. The maker does not publish the sensor's detection range or time setting.
The lantern has one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The maker suggests a clear LED A60 lamp of 8 W, 800 lm and 3000 K, sold separately – 800 lm matches an old 60 W bulb, and 3000 K is warm white. The glass is clear, so the shape of the bulb stays visible.
Material and the Helsingor series
The series takes its cue from Danish design, and the maker rates it for installation in coastal areas too: 304 stainless steel under a powder coat copes with damp and salt better than ordinary painted steel. The Helsingor series also includes wall lanterns and a lower pedestal lantern with a PIR sensor, in black and silver.
