Elstead Ashland Bay small outdoor wall lantern burnished bronze E27 max. 60 W IP44 KL-ASHLANDBAY2-S-BU

The small Ashland Bay is an outdoor wall lantern shaped like a ship's lamp: a cylindrical shade of clear seeded glass with fine air bubbles, ribbed bands along the glass edges, a domed cap with a carrying loop and two vertical rods guarding the shade. The aluminium body has a Burnished Bronze finish, a polished bronze with lighter rubbed highlights along the edges.

Size and mounting

The lantern is 27.8 cm high and 15.4 cm wide, and projects 17.3 cm from the wall. It is the smaller of the collection's wall versions, so it fits beside a front door or garden gate where a large fitting would dominate a narrow strip of facade — compare its height with the free space between the door frame and the eaves.

It is fixed on a round back plate 12.7 cm in diameter that covers the junction box, and weighs 1.66 kg. For an external building corner the maker lists corner brackets C-BKT2-BROWN, C-BKT2-BLACK or C-BKT5-BLACK — they are not included and are bought separately.

Bulb and light

Inside is one E27 lamp holder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is supplied, so you choose the colour temperature and brightness yourself; 60 W is the upper limit for the holder, not what the lantern draws. The bubbles in the glass soften the glare of the filament, and through the glazed base light also falls straight down onto the doorstep or path below.

The lantern can be dimmed, provided you fit a bulb marked as dimmable and connect it to a dimmer.

Where it can hang

IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, so this is an exterior fitting — for the facade by an entrance, under a porch roof or on a balcony. The maker also lists hotels and restaurants among its uses. It is a Class I fitting, so the supply cable at the mounting point must include an earth conductor; it runs on 220–240 V.

Ashland Bay is a Kichler collection distributed by Elstead Lighting, styled as a classic old-time lantern. The same small lantern also comes in a Weathered Zinc finish, and a large wall version is available in burnished bronze.
