Hollis is a five-arm semi-flush ceiling light by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. Five flat arms radiate from a round ceiling pan on a short stem, and from their ends hang globes of clear seeded glass held in brass bands. The steel frame is finished in Heritage Brass, a warm, slightly muted brass.
How big it is and where it goes
The fitting spans 81.3 cm and is only 30.5 cm high, so for all the reach of its arms it takes little of the room's height — the manufacturer designed it for rooms with lower ceilings. To see how much headroom is left under the globes, subtract 30.5 cm from your own ceiling height. It weighs 4.2 kg, so it needs a ceiling fixing that will carry that weight. It arrives in a carton of 84.5 × 84.5 × 31.1 cm weighing 7.95 kg — worth checking in advance if the delivery has to go up a staircase or into a lift.
Which bulbs you need to buy
Each of the five globes has an E14 socket and no bulbs are included, so you need five, each up to 40 W. The glass is clear, so the bulbs are visible, and the air bubbles in the glass break the light into small sparkles; the shape of the bulb therefore affects how the lamp looks. It can be dimmed with dimmable bulbs and a suitable dimmer.
Which rooms it suits
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water, which is why the manufacturer approves Hollis for bathrooms while also intending it for bedrooms and dining rooms. Globes on brass arms echo mid-twentieth-century lighting, which places it in the vintage style. It is a protection class I fitting, so an earth conductor is needed at installation — have an electrician connect it.
