Harper Flush Ceiling Light - 3 light sources - Polished chrome Elstead

Harper is a round flush ceiling light 40 cm across that sits tight against the ceiling — it drops only 15.9 cm below it. The band and the clips are steel in polished chrome, and the shade is clear glass with air bubbles through it: a cylindrical wall and a domed base. Chromed straps bolted across the top hold the glass cylinder, so the fixing stays visible as part of the form.

Where it fits

The 15.9 cm height is the figure that decides this kind of fitting: a flush light goes where a pendant would take too much headroom — in a room with a low ceiling, in a hallway, or over a spot people walk under.

The 40 cm diameter is instead a number to weigh against the size of the room: this is a fitting for the middle of a room, not a small accent over one defined area.

How much light it gives and what lamps it needs

Inside are three E27 lampholders rated at a maximum of 60 W each — that is the limit per socket, not for the whole fitting. Lamps are not included, so the colour and the brightness are yours to choose: three sources of around 800 lm each, the equivalents of the old 60-watt bulbs, give enough light for a whole room.

The manufacturer lists the fitting as compatible with dimmable lamps. The light itself has no dimming circuit, so the dimmable lamp and a dimmer in the wiring are what decide the range. The glass is not opal — the lamps show through the clear wall, and the bubbles break the light into small highlights, which is worth weighing when choosing between a clear and a frosted bulb.

Build and installation

The body is steel, the shade glass, and the finish is polished chrome — on the ceiling pan as well, so it does not stand apart from the rest. The fitting weighs 3.67 kg; the fixing has to carry that, so in a plasterboard ceiling it must be anchored to the structure behind.

The light is protection class I, so an earth conductor has to reach the ceiling point. The manufacturer intends it for interiors only, on 220–240 V, and covers it with a two-year guarantee. Harper is a Hinkley design and reaches the European trade through the distributor Elstead Lighting.
