A flush ceiling light in a living room has an awkward job: it has to light a room people relax in without turning it into an office. Because it sits tight to the ceiling, it spreads light across the whole area rather than dropping a pool onto a table — which is exactly what you want as a background layer, and exactly what you do not want as the only thing you can switch on at nine in the evening.
Diameter against floor area
The useful rule is coverage, not decoration. A fitting that is too small looks like an afterthought on a large ceiling and lights a disc in the middle of the room.

Two medium fittings in a long room beat one enormous one. They fill the corners, and they let you light half the room.
One fitting is rarely the whole answer
Treat the ceiling light as the layer that gets used when you walk in, clean, or look for something behind the sofa. Everything else — reading, television, an evening with people over — is better served by a floor lamp and a table lamp on a separate switch. Buy the ceiling fitting for even, shadowless coverage, and stop asking it to set a mood.
Dimming and colour temperature
2700 K reads as a living room; 3000 K is the upper limit before the space starts feeling like a corridor. Dimming matters more than the top figure — an integrated LED with a smooth range down to a few per cent turns one fitting into two. Check whether the model dims on a wall dimmer, on the mains switch in steps, or only by remote or app, because those three are not interchangeable and a trailing-edge dimmer paired with the wrong driver flickers.
Semi-flush, when you have the height
Above roughly 2.7 m a semi-flush fitting on a short stem earns its place: it lifts the diffuser 10-20 cm off the plaster and lets light wash upward as well as down, which makes a high ceiling look intentional rather than empty. Below 2.4 m, keep it genuinely flush — the walkway around a sofa and any door that opens inward will thank you.
Frequently asked
How many lumens for a living room ceiling light?
Around 100-150 lm per square metre from the ceiling layer, so 1,800-2,500 lm in a typical 18 m² room.
Flush or a pendant over the seating?
Flush if the ceiling is under 2.5 m or the fitting is in a walkway. A pendant needs height and something underneath it.
Can I centre it on the room or the sofa?
Centre it on the room. A ceiling fitting off-centre reads as a mistake, and the sofa will move before the ceiling rose does.
Is a colour-changing model worth it?
Only if you will actually use the warm end. Tunable white from 2700 K to 4000 K is more useful day to day than colour.
If the ceiling is high enough to give something room to hang, compare the pendant lights instead.
