The medium Harper is a semi-flush ceiling light by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. Its shallow shade of clear seeded glass, dotted with trapped air bubbles, sits in a wide metal band with decorative knobs on either side. The steel frame – round ceiling canopy, three curved arms and the band – is finished in Heritage Brass, a warm brushed brass tone.
Size and installation
The fitting is 45.6 cm in diameter and 25.3 cm high. The shade does not sit against the ceiling: three arms hold it away from the canopy, leaving open space between the glass and the ceiling. Compare those 25.3 cm of height with your ceiling height and with the spot the light will hang over – in a walkway every centimetre counts.
The light weighs 4.91 kg and the canopy fixes directly to the ceiling. It is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected to an earth conductor.
Bulbs and light
There are three E27 sockets, each rated by the maker for a bulb of up to 60 W. Bulbs are not included – you need to buy three. The seeded glass stays clear, so unlike the opal etched glass version the bulbs remain visible and their shape becomes part of the look. The maker shows the fitting with decorative Edison-style bulbs and recommends such an E27 LED bulb as a separate accessory.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs: to dim it you need a dimmer switch and three bulbs marked as dimmable.
Where it fits
The knobbed band and seeded glass point to a retro style, while the plain round body keeps it modern classic. The light is designed for interiors – bedrooms, dining rooms and living rooms.
The Harper range also includes a flush ceiling light and a small semi-flush version, each in Heritage Brass or polished chrome, with clear seeded or opal etched glass. That lets you pick fittings from one line for several neighbouring rooms.
