Elstead HARPER Semi-Flush Ceiling Light, 3 × E27, Polished Chrome, Seeded Glass, Ø36.6 cm

HARPER is a semi-flush fitting: the shade does not sit against the ceiling as on a flush light but hangs a few centimetres below it on a short stem. At 36.6 cm across and 25.3 cm tall it lands between a flush ceiling light and a pendant — right where the ceiling is too low for a drop but a flat fitting would look mean.

Seeded glass

The shade is clear seeded glass — deliberately set with trapped air bubbles. With the light on, the bubbles break the rays into small reflections, so the fitting sparkles rather than glowing as an even sheet. The glass is bound by a substantial metal ring with decorative knobs in polished chrome; the same fitting is also made in heritage brass (HK-HARPER-SFS-HB-CS).

Light sources

Inside are three E27 lampholders rated at a maximum of 60 W each. Lamps are not included. The fitting has no dimmer of its own but is compatible with dimmable lamps, so control needs dimmable bulbs and a dimmer in the installation. Since the glass is clear the bulb shows, which makes a decorative source — an Edison style, for instance — worth the trouble.

Installation and data

Supply 220–240 V, 50 Hz. The fitting is electrical class I and requires a protective earth conductor. Construction is steel and glass; weight 3.42 kg net, 3.8 kg boxed. For interior use. The manufacturer (Hinkley, distributed by Elstead) gives a two-year guarantee.
