s.luce Orb Pendant Light Brown Glass Globe 40 cm, 5 m Suspension, E27

Orb is a single globe of brown mouth-blown glass, 40 cm across, hung on a black cable. The E27 lampholder sits inside the globe and the tinted glass stays translucent, so the lamp shows through the wall. s.luce sells it as a gallery pendant: the suspension runs to 500 cm and is meant for tall rooms.

Diameter and drop

A 40 cm globe holds its proportion over a table 80–90 cm wide. Above a table top the bottom edge of a shade normally sits 70–80 cm over the surface, so the light covers the table without shining into the eyes of anyone seated.

The suspension reaches 500 cm, five metres — the allowance for a stairwell, an entrance hall or a room open to the floor above, where an ordinary one-metre drop would leave the fitting stranded under the ceiling. In a lower room the cable is shortened to the length needed.

Which lamp to fit

The fitting takes one E27 lamp rated up to 40 W and none is supplied, so colour temperature and output are your choice. The manufacturer states a limit that is easy to miss: the opening of the 40 cm globe accepts a lamp up to 12 cm in diameter, and that measurement decides whether a given decorative bulb will go in at all.

Because the glass is translucent the lamp stays fully visible — s.luce recommends decorative vintage-style LED lamps with an exposed filament for Orb. It can be dimmed, but that needs a dimmable lamp and a dimmer in the circuit; the luminaire itself carries no control gear.

Build and installation

The globe is mouth-blown, so each piece differs slightly in glass thickness and depth of brown; the fitting and suspension are metal. The luminaire is for indoor use only.

The manufacturer rates it protection class I, so an earth conductor has to reach the ceiling box. Orb comes in four diameters from 20 to 50 cm, which can be combined in one stairwell or over one table.
