s.luce Orb is a pendant light with a 40 cm globe of grey smoked glass. The globe is mouth-blown, so small bubbles, streaks and inclusions in the glass are part of its character rather than faults. It hangs from a white textile-covered cable, and the canopy and three-arm globe holder are white-lacquered aluminium.
Size and suspension
The globe is 40 cm across and the maximum drop is 150 cm. The cable is shortened during installation, so the height can be matched to the ceiling and the table; over a dining table the bottom of the globe usually sits 70–80 cm above the top. A 40 cm diameter keeps good proportions over a table 80–90 cm wide.
The fitting is protection class I, so it must be connected to the earth conductor. The IP20 rating means it is for indoor use only.
Which bulb to choose
The light has one E27 lampholder and is sold without a bulb. The maker allows up to 40 W, and with the 40 cm globe the bulb may be up to 12 cm in diameter, which is what passes through the opening in the glass. That fits most of the decorative vintage-style bulbs the maker recommends for this range.
Light colour and brightness depend on the bulb you choose. The fitting can be dimmed, but only with a dimmable LED bulb and a suitable dimmer. Smoked glass dims the light passing through it, so over a table a brighter bulb is worth choosing than under a clear globe.
Which rooms it suits
The maker intends the Orb for dining rooms, kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms. Several globes in a row work over a table or kitchen counter, and larger groups on a shared canopy suit stairwells and high rooms.
