Masthead is a wall light from Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting: an upright cylinder of clear glass held in polished chrome rings and slim rods, with black caps at the top and bottom. The fitting projects from the wall on a round chrome backplate.
How big it is and where to fit it
The wall light is 35.1 cm high, 12.2 cm wide and projects 12.8 cm. The round backplate is about 12 cm across, so it covers a standard wall box. The narrow, upright form fits on either side of a mirror where a wider wall light would not — measure the space left between the edge of the mirror and a cabinet or corner.
The manufacturer specifies Masthead for interiors and bathrooms. IP44 means protection against water splashing from any direction, which allows it to hang by a basin or mirror; which bathroom zone it may go in is decided by the wiring regulations.
What light it gives and what you need to buy
The fitting has one E27 socket for a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulb is included. The glass is clear and surrounds the bulb on all sides, so the bulb is clearly visible — a slim tubular bulb with a visible filament suits it best. Beside a mirror, 3000–4000 K is a sensible choice. The fitting works with a dimmer if the bulb is dimmable.
Construction
The body is steel in polished chrome combined with black, with a glass enclosure. It is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected to an earth conductor. Hinkley describes Masthead as having a nautical touch, and its plain cylindrical body suits a modern style; the series also includes a version in Heritage Brass with black.
