MALVANO is a round wall light 22 cm across, built from two materials that rarely meet: a porcelain ring in a muted grey-blue and a white opal shade set into its centre. The ring carries horizontal concentric grooves – the trace of throwing on a potter's wheel, which in raking light draws fine stripes across the body.
Porcelain instead of metal
Luminaire bodies are usually made from aluminium or powder-coated steel. Here it is porcelain, and it shows: the colour is in the material rather than on top of it, so it will not chip off a knocked edge and will not fade. The matt, slightly irregular ceramic surface also reacts differently to light – it does not throw point reflections the way lacquer does but gathers light softly along the edges of the grooves. The price is weight: the fitting alone is 1.7 kg, so plasterboard calls for cavity fixings.
The shade and the light
The centre is closed by opal glass – milky white all the way through, not merely surface-frosted. As a result the G9 lamp inside is not visible as a point and the fitting reads as an evenly lit disc. The contrast between the cool blue of the ceramic and the warm white of the glass is the whole effect here: switched on, the centre brightens while the ring stays darker, so the fitting reads as a moon in a hoop.
Lamp and dimming
The lampholder is G9 with a 5 W ceiling – a deliberately low limit that rules out old G9 halogens (25–40 W) and points straight at LED lamps. No lamp is supplied, so you choose the colour yourself: 2700 K emphasises the warmth of the glass, 3000 K stays neutral against the blue of the ceramic. The fitting can be dimmed, but only with a lamp marked as dimmable – the luminaire itself has no control gear, the dimmer in the installation does the work.
Installation
The fitting mounts on the surface over a standard back box, supply 230 V. IP20 confines it to dry interiors – in a bathroom it belongs outside the protection zones at most, well away from bath and shower.
