A luminaire you can drive over

The Rena Cover 1770BL is a square in-ground luminaire from Norlys, built into a paved surface — a driveway, a terrace, the strip around a house. The manufacturer rates it for a maximum load of 1000 kg, so a car on pneumatic tyres may drive across it. There is one condition worth knowing before choosing the spot: these fittings must not sit where horizontal forces act — on the curve of a drive, where cars brake hard, pull away, or turn with the wheels stationary. The body carries vertical load; sideways shear it does not.

The "Cover" version, or why the light leaves sideways

This is the shielded variant: the output does not shine straight up but leaves through four sides, capped from above. That is why the figures look unusual — the LED produces 460 lm and 19 lm leaves the fitting. It is neither a fault nor lost efficiency but the point of a marker light. The Rena Cover is meant to trace the edge of a drive, a step or the line of a path, not to flood the surface like a floodlight. The side effect is the absence of glare: looked at from above you see no glowing diode, only four bright slots just above ground level.

Light output

The built-in LED runs at a warm 3000 K on 4.2 W, with a colour rendering index of CRI 80 and colour consistency of SDCM3 — individual units therefore light in the same tone, which shows immediately in a row of fittings along a drive. A power factor of PF 0.99 means the luminaire barely burdens the installation with reactive power. The light source is fixed and not user-replaceable. The fitting is dimmable, and its inrush current is 17 mA for 60 ms — a figure that matters when sizing the breaker for a circuit carrying a dozen of these points.

Durability: IP68, IK09, −20 to +45 °C

The luminaire is sealed to IP68, so it withstands not only rain but continuous immersion — in the ground that means working in standing water after a downpour or in thawing snow. IK09 impact resistance corresponds to 10 joules, and protection class I requires the earth conductor to be connected. The operating range covers winter and midsummer alike: −20 °C to +45 °C. The body is powder-coated cast aluminium with a nickel-plated brass gland; the cover is satin polycarbonate, UV-stabilised so it does not yellow in the sun.

Installation and what you also need

The fitting is mounted into an installation box set in the substrate, following the manufacturer's instructions. The box is not included — Norlys supplies it as a separate accessory (index 145, 146 and 7661). The luminaire comes with 1 m of H05BQ-F 3G1 cable terminated in a THB.391.R4A.L connector, so the joint to the installation is made with a plug coupling rather than a cut cable underground. The body measures 13 × 13 cm and stands 18.2 cm tall — that is the space to allow for in the base layer under the paving.
