RENA 1780ST is a round in-ground recessed luminaire that can be driven over. The front is stainless steel, the body a powder-coated aluminium casting, and the cable entry a nickel-plated brass gland. The glass is clear, the gasket silicone.

Drive-over – but within what limits

This is the first thing to establish before buying. The manufacturer permits crossing by vehicles on pneumatic tyres – a car on a driveway, a trolley, a bicycle. It is expressly not to be used in traffic lanes, or anywhere solid wheels, hard tyres or vehicles with high axle loads may pass over it. The IK09 impact rating describes a blow, not a sustained load.

IP68 – why it is necessary

A luminaire set in the ground stands in water every time it rains. IP68 means fully dust-tight and resistant to continuous immersion – the only class that makes sense here; IP67 (temporary immersion) would not be enough. The silicone gasket and the brass cable gland are the parts on which that sealing actually depends.

The light

The 4.2 W LED module gives 321 lm at a warm 3000 K, at 76.4 lm/W and CRI 80. Distribution is symmetrical at 15° – a narrow column of light upwards. In a ground fitting that is deliberate: the point is to mark the edge of a driveway or path, or to graze a facade or a tree from below, not to light a surface. A power factor of 0.99 and SDCM3 colour binning (colour deviation between units invisible to the eye) only start to matter once a dozen of these sit in a row.

Dimming and installation

The fitting dims on TRIAC, i.e. from a classic phase-cut dimmer – no controller, no bus. Fixing is through 3 holes ø 4.5 mm set on a ø 100 mm circle at 120° intervals. Supply 230 V, LED source built in and non-replaceable, rated life 50,000 hours, energy class E. Made in the European Union.
