A cylinder instead of a hole in the ceiling

The HALO 8196 is a downlight in surface-mounted form: rather than cutting an opening in plasterboard, the finished cylinder is screwed straight onto the ceiling. That is the answer for concrete soffits, for ceilings with no service void, and for every refurbishment where there is nowhere to hide a fitting. The shape is plain — a cylinder 12.7 cm across and the same height, so it projects just under 13 cm from the ceiling.

The deep black reflector, and what follows from it

Inside the tube sits a deeply recessed black reflector. It keeps the lamp out of the normal field of view: look at the fitting from an angle and you see no bright point, only a dark opening. It is the principle used in shop and gallery lighting — less glare, more contrast on the surface being lit. The black interior absorbs sideways scatter, so the beam runs narrower and straight down.

GU10, 10 W at most, and LED only

The fitting takes an ordinary GU10 lamp with a 50 mm reflector. The manufacturer states a firm limit, though: max. 10 W, LED only. This is not advice about the electricity bill but a safety condition — an old 35 W or 50 W halogen GU10 releases far more heat inside a closed cylinder than this housing can shed. The bulb is not included, so colour temperature, beam angle and dimming are yours to choose: 3000 K for a living room or bedroom, 4000 K over a kitchen worktop, a narrow beam to pick out a picture, a wide one for general light.

Material, colour, build

The body is painted steel, the supporting parts ABS. The colour is black to the manufacturer's own reference P013 RAL 9005 — a uniform matt shade, the same one used across other black Nowodvorski fittings, which makes it easy to combine several ranges in one room. The luminaire is made in Poland.

Installation: what to settle before buying

Mounting is direct — the base screws to the ceiling and the cable enters from above. Two things are worth checking first. The fitting is protection class I, so the earth conductor (green/yellow) must be connected; in an old two-core installation that has to be resolved before fitting. And no mounting kit is supplied — screws and plugs must match the ceiling construction. IP20 means dry rooms; above a shower or a bath this fitting has no place.
