A LED Labs strip from the PROFI line running on 12 V, with 60 SMD 2835 diodes per metre and a draw of 8 W per running metre. The reel is 5 metres long and holds 300 diodes in total; 6500 K is cool white with a distinctly cold, bluish cast.
What 6500 K is good for
Cool white is not a universal colour and choosing 6500 K should be deliberate. This light raises contrast and aids concentration, so it works where seeing detail matters: over a kitchen worktop, in a workshop, in a wardrobe, in a chilled display, in a merchandise cabinet. In a living room or bedroom the same colour reads as harsh — for those spaces the 3000 K or 4000 K version of the same strip is the better choice.
12 V and choosing a driver
The strip runs on a safe 12 V DC, so it is never connected straight to the mains — it needs a driver, which is not included. A full five-metre reel draws about 40 W, so the driver should have headroom: at least 20% is the usual allowance, which here means a 12 V unit of 50–60 W. If the strip is cut into shorter runs, the power scales with length at 8 W per metre. 12 V is usually chosen when the runs are short and the driver sits nearby; for long runs the 24 V version suffers smaller voltage drop.
60 diodes per metre
Sixty diodes per metre is the baseline density, and it proves itself above all inside an aluminium profile with a milky cover — the diffuser merges the individual points into a continuous line of light. Used bare, glued into a skirting board or under a cabinet, it will read as a row of separate dots. If the strip is going to be seen directly, the 120 LED/m version is worth considering.
Installation and cutting
The strip is sold by the metre in full five-metre packs. It can be cut at the marked solder points, normally every three diodes — cutting anywhere else breaks the circuit. The surface underneath should be clean, degreased and preferably metal or aluminium, because the diode sheds its heat through what it is stuck to: a strip glued straight onto plastic or timber runs hotter and loses life. The base version has no protective coating, so it belongs strictly in dry interiors — for a bathroom or outdoors, use the IP65 equivalents.
